    Thirteen riverside acres downtown. Best light for the Mirror Pond reflection is early morning. Do not feed the geese; they already run the place.

    Pouring since 1988, on the corner of Bond and Greenwood. This is the room where Black Butte Porter was first brewed.

    The three smokestacks are on the REI building — the old Brooks-Scanlon powerhouse. Summer concerts at Hayden Homes Amphitheater next door.

    Yes, you can still rent a movie. Membership costs a few bucks, and the laminated card is the real souvenir.

Floating the Deschutes

    Float the Deschutes (put in at Riverbend Park)

    Put in at Riverbend Park, ride the little wave train through the Bend Whitewater Park, and climb out at Drake Park — river right, just past the Galveston Bridge. The Ride the River shuttle ($5, roughly every 45 minutes, mid-June to early September) loops you back.

Day trip: Mt. Bachelor

Day trip: Lava Lands

    11 miles south on Hwy 97, and a road climbs 500 feet to the top of Lava Butte. The High Desert Museum is on the same stretch of highway, a few miles closer to town.
